Reproduction and digital restoration of a photochrom print made by the Detroit Publishing Company colorized from a black-and-white photograph made in 1899 showing a whaleback steamer passing through the locks at Saulte Ste. Marie. Whalebacks were invented by Duluth’s Alexander McDougall and built in Superior, Wisconsin.
