Description
Reproduction and digital restoration of a photograph showing the whaleback steamer Christopher Columbus on Lake Michigan in 1911. The vessel was built in 1893 as a ferry for Chicago’s World Columbian Exposition and was the only whaleback passenger ship ever constructed. Whalebacks were invented by Duluth’s Alexander McDougall and built in Superior, Wisconsin. The photo was made for the Detroit Publishing Company and used to create color lithographic postcards.
