An 1826 watercolor by James Otto Lewis showing John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Post along the banks of the St. Louis River at Fond du Lac, Minnesota (now a neighborhood in Duluth), in 1826. The scene was painted from Nekuk Island, then home to an Ojibwe village and show the fur post’s stockade, buildings, and the white canvas tents of an encampment of American soldiers there to participate in the signing of the First Treaty of Fond du Lac.
